Carving a Portland stone sculpture from a single block.

Alec Peever has been designing letters and cutting them in stone since leaving art school in 1976. From a childhood interest in lettering and calligraphy, his professional work has developed into many areas of the visual arts, encompassing large scale sculpture, relief carving in stone, heraldry, sign making and public art.
Everything is handmade in his Oxfordshire studio using essentially traditional techniques, but experimentation, along with the finest craftsmanship have always underpinned his countless imaginative projects. He has created poetry trails, water features, monuments in numerous churches and cathedrals, individually sculpted churchyard memorials, garden features and installations in public places throughout the British Isles and abroad. |

The choice of materials and their appropriate use is of fundamental importance to the outcome and the studio has produced work in all kinds of stone, marble and slate, bronze, stainless steel, brick, glass and wood.
Preferring to work in direct collaboration with clients, Alec begins each fresh enquiry with a meeting to discuss the possibilities. The commissioning procedure can be a lengthy one involving several stages of drawing, costing and site visits, but the client is always kept informed of progress and is indeed welcome to participate in the process. |
